Covid in Lebanon became widespread between November 2020 and April 2021 with a peak in January 2021. After a respite, the figures rose again in August 2021 and currently, according to statistics, the numbers are on the decline

At present,  from what I saw and heard, there is a pervading scepticism about the vaccinations, fuelled by  fear of the possible risks and anger at what are seen as the illegitimate profits of the pharmaceutical companies. Diffidence is very common and precautionary measures, even the most basic, have over time all but vanished.

To my complete surprise, however,  the children in the kindergarten at Assomoud are rigorously separated and have their masks checked and repositioned  over their mouths regularly.  This seems a total nonsense when contrasted with the behaviour of the rest of the population and a contradiction to the norms adhered to in Italy and Europe as well as the recommendations of the WHO and UNICEF.

Assumoud explained that it was, in fact, UNICEF, who imposed these regulations and therefore, it is to them that they will appeal with regard to this situation, drawing their attention to their official site where UNICEF themselves state that wearing a mask at such a young age can have serious effects on a child’s mental health because of lack of oxygen.
