After two years’ away I was pleased to find a professional, close-knit team; everyone knew what to do and just got on with it: they prepared their instruments, got into their correct position on stage, placed their sheet music on their stands - not nearly enough for the swelling numbers in the orchestra, which now also includes some talented beginners - and waited for the conductor’s signal to begin.
Unimaginable a few years ago, this success story has been achieved thanks to a continuous and sustained teaching programme guaranteed through the support of the 8xMille scheme from The Waldensian Church for the project ‘Band without Borders”.
Wajdi Abou Diab told me that the orchestra is now ready to work with other conductors, not only himself, and with other musicians - an essential step in their musical development.
We will try. Well aware as we are of the current difficulties, we hope that we can find a way for them to work with other youth orchestras and involve more organisations.
