What we do

We have concentrated our energy on the Palestinians, one of the most long suffering and oppressed of people, who have been deprived  of their fundamental rights since the expropriation of their land by Israel. Our goal is to bring to public attention their culture, so that it is not forgotten and to provide information which the official sources omit or misrepresent.

In order to make the best use of our limited resources, we have restricted our voluntary work to Lebanon, where Palestinians make up 10% of the population.

Some arrived in 1948 (The Nakba), some in 1967 (The 6 Day War) and others in 2011 (the war in Syria) while some were born in Lebanon. The Palestinians live in refugee camps, lack all fundamental civil, social and political rights and are helped by U.N.R.W.A and NGOs , both local and international.

It is with concrete projects aimed at children, young people and women that we display our solidarity, thanks to our supporters and volunteers.

  • In Lebanon, in the Palestinian refugee camps.
  • In Italy, in schools, libraries and other educational institutes and associations.

The association promotes and encourages volunteering, giving young people experiences which will stay with them their whole lives. For those not so young, it provides them with an opportunity to make use of their wide experience and expertise for the benefit of all the recipients of our projects.

There are permanent volunteers in the association, but we also welcome volunteers on a short-term basis  linked to a particular project they may have proposed. Acceptance of any project depends on its feasibility and its approval by the local partners.

The permanent roles filled by volunteers, apart from the President, are:

Treasury, Nadia Virgili; The Arts, Simonetta Lambertini; Sponsorship, Chiara Maurilio; Music area Valeria Mineo; Sport area Marika Prandato; Web design and Web manager, Maurizio Ambrosanio; Social secretary, Giovanni Giunta; Graphics, Enrico Frattaroli; English version of the website, Jill Morris.

ULAIA: the name, the logo

What we all affectionately call ‘the little devil’, actually represents a Shaman of the lost Ona tribe from Tierra del Fuego. The hands raised towards the heavens symbolise the longing for spirituality, while the tail pointing downwards towards the earth signifies the connection between the two elements: the sky and the earth. To attain spirituality you need the strength of a bull, hence the horns.

This symbol was chosen hand in hand with the name ULAIA, which was what the Ona tribe called Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego.

The logo and name were chosen in  honour of our co-founder Gaston Troiano, director, actor and socio-cultural artist and actress, Tanny Giser, who are both still members of our board.
